Rocket League's diverse skill-based mechanics are what make it such an incredibly fun and rewarding game to learn. From basic maneuvers to advanced freestyle tricks, developing mechanical mastery opens up a whole new world of possibilities on the field.
In this comprehensive guide, I'll break down the 10 most important tips and tricks I've learned in my journey improving my mechanics. These techniques helped push my game to the next level, and I guarantee they will do the same for you if you take the time to practice.
1. Flip Resets
As the flashiest mechanic in Rocket League, flip resets are a must-learn. Here are my recommendations:
-
Timing is key. Most new players go for resets too late when the ball is falling. Aim to flip earlier, when the ball is rising or at its peak, to buy more shot time.
-
Holding brake keeps your car stuck to the ball. Without it, you may miss shots or follow-ups.
-
Air roll contact provides more power. Spin as you hit the ball for stronger shoots and easier follow-ups.
-
Practice in Free Play consciously working on early flips from various heights and positions to internalize the feel.
-
Flip Reset playground is also exceptional for realistic drill scenarios to start chaining resets together.
2. Double Taps
These wall shots are game-changers when done right. The most common mistake is proximity.
-
Give the ball distance off the backboard for a clearer look at net. Angles get too tough when too close.
-
Tap the ball firmly upward, not forward, with air roll contact for ideal bounce trajectories.
-
Double Tap playground puts consistent wall pass setups at your service round-the-clock. Spend time perfecting contact points and spacing.
3. Dribbling and Flicks
Ball control reigns supreme in RL. Master smooth dribbles to set up accurate, powerful flicks.
-
Use custom training or Dribble 2 Overhaul to minimize bounces and "sparks" indicating poor contact.
-
Catch Into Flick helps transition smooth catches to immediate shots without losing pace.
-
Focus first on single flicks, then work on chaining moves together as your ball control sharpenes. Baby steps are key.
4. Air Dribbling
Taking your dribbling airborne requires nuanced car and ball movement.
-
Push the ball slightly upward, not forward, as you boost to influence its rode without popping it off.
-
Holding air roll constantly can throw your angle off. Rely on it briefly for adjustments, then level off.
-
Maps like Air Dribble Gauntlet provide godsend feedback on ideal contact points via overlays. Master those locations.
-
Creative freeplay practice chaining air dribbles and flicks together is also hugely valuable for real-game readiness.
5. Fast Aerials
The ability to blast up for aerial shots and saves quickly isnon-negotiable in higher levels of competitive play. Mastering fast aerials through repetition in training packs like Fast Aerials by Goose will unlock a whole new vertical element to your offensive and defensive game. Be sure to HOLD BOOST throughout the entire motion.
6. Speed Flipping
The mechanic that caused the biggest disruption in Rocket League's meta, speed flipping exponentially increases your team's pace and ability to respond in critical moments. While extremely difficult, gaining proficiency will elevate you above opponents who can't utilize this advanced technique. When practicing, take a quick pause between repititions to let your car fully reset on the ground each time for accurate feedback.
7. Pinches
Whether solo cucker pinches or perfectly-timed team pinches, mastering these oddly satisfying plays can seriously damage opponents' will to defend certain areas of the pitch. For cuckers, simultaneously holding power slide and an air roll while Contacting dead-center does the trick. On teams, have one player flip for power with the other jumping once to sync the impact.
8. Freestyling
While not crucial for competitive integrity, freestyling tricks are immensely satisfying and help develop ball control, car control, confidence and creativity like nothing else. Stalls require simultaneous air roll, drift opposite stick direction and jump, then releasing instantly. master the delicate timing. For pogo sticks, lean back while lightly tilting your nose downward to bounce rhythmically off the squared corner of the car roof.
9. Musty Flicks
Almost as disruptive as speed flipping, the musty revolutionized mechanics by disguising your intent until the last moment. The keys are softly tapping the ball with your rear bumper as if for an air dribble, but immediately flipping yourself backwards parallel to the ball for a launching scoop shot. Touch points matter – aim for dead-center of where the ball contacts your car.
10. Repetition is King
While natural talent exists, thousands of hours of methodical, goal-oriented practice are what ultimately separate pro players from amateurs. Use free play, custom training and workshop maps to grind each technique, continuously refining small details, until motions become utterly ingrained in your muscle memory and you can consistently pull them off without hesitation in match situations. Avoidplateaus through constant challenge seeking. Your potential is limitless with discipline!
